‘Best game’ - Nigerian media verdict on Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho
The latest Leicester City news as both started and had a big impact in the 6-0 win for their nation on Sunday evening.
While Leicester City have not been in action this week, a number of their players on international duty have been.
Harry Souttar was on the scoresheet for Australia for their 2-2 draw with Mexico in the early hours of Sunday morning. Mads Hermansen was on the bench for Denmark’s 1-0 win over Finland, with former City man Kasper Schmeichel in goal.
Two other City players who were in action on Sunday were Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho. Both were named in the starting line-up for Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations qualification match against Sao Tome and Principe.
While neither were on the scoresheet in the comfortable 6-0 win, both were heavily involved in the game. Ndidi was named as stand-in captain for the clash and provided an assist for former City man Ademola Lookman, while Iheanacho assisted the third goal of the game scored by Nottingham Forest’s Taiwo Awoniyi.
The two City players have been regulars in Enzo Maresca’s starting XI this season, despite links with moves away from the club in the final days of the transfer window. It seems that they will now return to Seagrave full of confidence.
Following the win, the Nigerian media delivered their verdict on the performance of each player to feature. Here’s what they had to say about the performances of Ndidi and Iheanacho.
Ndidi was rated 8.5 out of ten by OwnGoal Nigeria . “Easily his best game in a Super Eagles shirt for a while,” it read. “Broke up play easily and claimed the assist for the second goal of the game scored by Lookman.”
Iheanacho was also praised for his performance, earning a rating of seven out of ten. “Twice thread passes that sliced Sao Tom open but was also guilty of trying some efforts from range which were wayward,” the assessment read. “Did redeem himself with a clever chip for the assist for Awoniyi’s goal.”
